In Gaelic, thrift is called tonn a’ chladaich which means beach wave. It is derived from þrifask, which means to thrive. The plant’s common name, thrift, comes from the Old Norse word, þrif, which means prosperity. The word translates directly as “coastal areas,” referring to the places where thrift flowers naturally grow. Although thrift flowers come from an entirely different plant family, their clustered, globular blossoms do resemble those of Dianthus flowers. This refers to cluster-headed plants from the Dianthus genus. The genus name Armeria comes from a post-classical, Latinized version of the old French word armoires. Armeria maritima ‘Dusseldorf Pride’ – The flowers of this 5-inch tall cultivar range from dark pink to burgundy red and usually rebloom in the autumn.Armeria maritima ‘Nifty Thrifty’ – This cultivar features white stripes that run down the edges of each slender leaf.Armeria maritima ‘Rubifolia’ – This variety features magenta flowers and burgundy foliage that becomes increasingly green as the temperature rises.Armeria maritima ‘Laucheana’ – This cultivar features darker green foliage and bright pink flowers that bloom intermittently throughout the season.Armeria maritima ‘Bloodstone’ – This cultivar’s blossoms are almost red.
